Your website has SEO Value: Here’s how to protect it

Whether it’s a brand refresh, a new domain, or a new event website, change can be exciting, but if you’re not careful, it can be costly. One of the most overlooked casualties of a poorly executed website update is search visibility.

Your website isn’t just a digital flyer for your events, it’s a valuable SEO asset. If your site has built any level of authority, organic traffic, or backlinks over the years, then it holds real value. Value that, if lost, could mean fewer attendees, less exhibitor interest, and a harder job for your marketing team.

So before you re-launch, rebrand, or redesign, ask yourself one question: Is my current website ranking in search engines? Because if it is, you’ve got something worth protecting.

At ASP, we work with exhibition and conference organisers every day to ensure their websites stay visible, searchable, and high-performing – even through major changes. Here’s what every organiser should know before making the switch.

Why SEO Value Matters for Events

Your website’s SEO performance determines how easily attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, and press can find you via search engines. It’s not just about vanity rankings, it’s about visibility, discoverability, and trust.

  • Attendees search for your event by name: If your site isn’t ranking, they could land on outdated listings or third-party directories.
  • Exhibitors and sponsors research events like yours, strong SEO makes you look like a serious player.
  • Search traffic is year-round, not just during campaign season.

And it’s not easy to build up that SEO value. Once lost, it can take years to regain.

How to Know if Your Site Has SEO Value

You can do two quick checks:

1. Check Your Authority

Use the free Ahrefs Backlink Checker to look up your site’s Domain Rating (DR). A DR of 20+ indicates you’ve built up meaningful authority, especially through backlinks from trusted sources.

2. Check Your Organic Traffic

Tools like Similarweb or Google Search Console can show how much of your traffic comes from organic search. If you’re seeing regular visitors from Google, your site has value.

Verdict:

• If you have a DR of 20+

• Or you receive organic search traffic

You’ve got SEO equity worth preserving.

The Hidden SEO Risks of a Domain Change

Changing your domain name might seem like a brand refresh or technical update, but if mishandled, it’s one of the riskiest moves you can make for your SEO.

A poorly managed domain switch can lead to:

  • A drop in rankings (or total disappearance from search)
  • Loss of backlink equity
  • Broken user journeys
  • Decline in registrations and leads

We’ve seen event organisers unknowingly destroy years of visibility overnight.

How to Migrate Without Losing SEO

You’ve got two options when switching domains:

Option 1: Lazy Migration (Not Recommended)

    • Redirect all old pages to the homepage.
    • Result: Google and users get lost. You lose SEO equity, backlinks, and trust.

Option 2: Proper URL-by-URL Migration

  • Redirect every old page to its new equivalent.
  • Result: Search engines preserve your rankings, users find what they need, and your traffic recovers quickly.

Here’s how they compare:

Don’t Forget the Redirects and Domain Hosting

A proper domain migration includes:

  • 301 redirects from each old page to the new one
  • Continued hosting of your old domain (for at least 2 years) to keep redirects workingSearch engines and users may continue referencing your old URLs for months, sometimes years. Letting the old domain expire can break everything, including valuable backlinks.

The ASP Approach: Migration Without Mayhem

When ASP supports a domain change or website migration, we:

    • Assess your current SEO value (free check available)
    • Plan the redirects, URL-by-URL
    • Host your redirects for you (at no extra cost while you’re a client)
    • Support SEO tracking before and after the change

That means your SEO engine keeps running, even if your domain or site is completely overhauled.
