The Spanish city of Valencia is set to begin its year as the European Green Capital 2024, having been awarded the title by the European Commission due to its commitment to sustainable tourism.
The programme of events and projects that will be launched during the year was revealed during a ceremony at the Palau de la Música.
The city’s geography is considered a key point for Valencia’s campaign which will be joined by other projects that are currently being developed. According to organisers, examples include the Central Park, which will add 230,000 m² of green spaces to the city centre.
During Valencia’s presentation, a guide called ‘Green Routes of Valencia‘ was launched. This manual includes the aims of this year’s European Green Capital, as well as a set of routes to facilitate visitors’ enjoyment while showcasing the city’s sustainability achievements.
These routes focus on three key areas: nature, sustainable mobility, and the recovery of public spaces.
International events will also be held in the city during 2024. For these, a programme will include meetings such as the ‘Mission Cities’ conference and an important conference on wetlands.
In addition, there will be celebrations arising from public-private collaboration which will complete the programme and involve the whole city.
