AFRICA – The Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association (SHTA) is to meet with its members to discuss crime, safety, and environmental concerns on the island country.
The umbrella group for the hospitality and tourism trade in the Seychelles will convene at the Seychelles International Conference Centre 13 January 2012.
SHTA’s Executive Director, Raymond St Ange, said: “2011 was a critical year for the tourism trade and a lack of preparedness meant that at times our ‘engine’ was not operating at maximum efficiency. This caused certain frustrations and critical delays, meaning we could not fully grasp and carry forward the objectives and visions that out President communicated.”
One hundred and ninety thousand visitors entered the Seychelles in 2011, but due to crime, safety and environmental concerns of visitors, St Ange said this was below the figure the state had aspired to.
“For 2012, more can and must be done, and our association is determined to be fully engaged in the process,” added St Ange.
A statement on the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s website says of safety and security on the island: “There have been incidents of the hijacking of vessels by Somali pirates in the exclusive economic zone waters of the Seychelles.
“Take care in more popular places such as Beau Vallon and the back streets of Victoria, especially after dark. Beaches, parked cars and accommodation are favourite targets for thieves.”
