Ecuador’s capital Quito is to welcome 30,000 people to the Habitat III conference next month.
The global summit of the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development is set to draw delegates from 193 countries over the four days, 17-20 October.
The event is celebrated every 20 years and will be the first summit ever to be held in a Latin American city.
Heads of state, ministers, mayors as well as housing and urban development experts and international press will be among the delegates.
Economic social research and development consultancy Ekos has estimated Quito should expect 18,000 international visitors and 12,000 national attendees, in addition to another 10,000 that will take part in various activities such as networking events, debates and seminars.
Ekos also estimates the event will result in revenues of US$31.5m over the course of the next five years, due to a large tourism push and to the economic spends of Habitat III participants.
