EUROPE – Vienna has seen a 3.1 per cent increase in overnight stays between January and June 2013 compared to the same period in 2012.
The Austrian capital recorded over 5.7m overnight stays during the period, with German visitors leading the way with 1,146,000 bednights, up 3 per cent on last year’s figures.
“In the first half of 2013, Vienna once again delivered proof of its attractiveness as a tourist destination,” says Director of the Vienna Tourist Board, Norbert Kettner.
Among Vienna’s top 10 markets, the home Austrian market followed Germany with 1,116,000 overnight stays, up two per cent on the same period last year. Russia, Switzerland and Japan also saw increases in overnight stays of 14 per cent, 12 per cent and four per cent respectively. The UK ranked in sixth place among Vienna’s top markets providing 203,000 overnight stays, an increase of eight per cent on last year’s figures.
Other countries recording growth in overnight stays in Vienna include South Korea, Brazil and Arab countries in Asia.
International overnights represent an 80.3 per cent share of Vienna’s total visitor count. The average occupancy of Vienna’s beds was 50.3 per cent at the half year, with available beds increasing by 5,530 from June 2012 to June 2013. The city has 58,500 beds.
