EUROPE – Malta International Airport has recorded record summer traffic for the period April-October 2012, with a 5.7 per cent increase compared to 2011, according to CEO Markus Klaushofer and CCO Alan Borg.
“These results are good news for us, but most of all for our airline clients, growing from 73 per cent to 81 per cent in less than a decade,” said Klaushofer. “This means that their operation to and from Malta is a successful one. It is important that all partners obtain positive results as it means that the investment by all concerned is reaping the desired effect.”
Klaushofer hopes the second year of waiving landing fees on all scheduled passenger traffic during the winter schedule will “continue incentivising airlines to keep their operation to and from Malta all year round”. He sees Valletta becoming the 2018 European City of Culture as a “golden opportunity to promote Malta as a destination for history and culture”.
In addition to 2018 City of Culture, Valletta was recently awarded European Walled Towns presidency for the next three years, which has seen Joseph Spiteri elected President of the association.
Other awards for Malta include the European Energy Award won by the Local Councils of Island and Pembroke. Nine organisations from seven Mediterranean countries have been involved in a trans-national co-operation project since June 2010, which aims to foster widespread and systematic integrated energy planning in Mediterranean municipalities and regions.
Malta is also celebrating winning a three-year partnership with Be Viacom, Viacom International Media Network’s brand engagement division, to produce the Isle of MTV concert. The announcement was made at World Travel Market in London and marks the seventh consecutive year that MTV and Malta will collaborate in producing the MTV live event in Floriana’s Il-Fosos Square. The open air concert will take place on 26 June 2013 and is expected to attract 50,000 music fans.
