EUROPE – Denmark has topped the Climate Change Performance Index table with positive trends in all index categories and with the leading position in the policy sector for the third consecutive year.
Denmark’s renewable energy and carbon emissions reductions policies helped the country top the index and surpass its benchmark for the winner’s podium.
The index revealed Denmark as the best performer when it comes to carbon emissions from electricity and heat production. With a feed-in tariff and an ‘open-door’ policy to integrate renewables into the grid, Denmark claims to have a ‘very progressive electricity sector’.
To further develop its sustainable practices, Denmark has an energy agreement in place that says 50 per cent of all electricity consumption must come from wind energy by 2020; the same applies to all renewables combined, which is targeted at 70 per cent.
