AUSTRALASIA – Barbara Maple, the Past President of international convention centre association AIPC, has been appointed as an events industry advisor to the Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct project.
Maple spearheaded the redevelopment of the Vancouver Convention Centre, which went on to receive the AIPC APEX Award for World’s Best Convention Centre. Her other previous roles include being the Former Chair of the World Council of Venue Management and Past President of the Joint Meetings Industry Council.
The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre’s (SCEC) event facilities are to be redeveloped resulting in exhibition space of at least 40,000sqm and flexible plenary spaces with a combined capacity of at least 10,000 delegates. Facilities would also cater to sporting, musical and theatrical events for at least 12,000 people.
“There are few people on the international scene who have Barbara’s events industry pedigree,” Infrastructure NSW Project Director, Tim Parker, said. “Barbara will work closely with the project team, ensuring that the new facilities, set to open in late 2016, meet the design, technological and operational needs of this highly diverse and complex industry.”
Maple said: “Sydney already has a reputation as a global city, what it needs now are world class and fully-integrated convention, exhibition and entertainment facilities to support that reputation.”
“The international events industry is very competitive. To stay on top and keep your market share you need to remain current with trends and innovations,” she added.
