Athens hosted the 64th Annual Congress of the European Regional Science Association (ERSA) from 26-29 August, drawing nearly 1,000 academics, researchers and policymakers from around the world.
Held under the theme “Regional Science in Turbulent Times”, the congress examined global issues such as economic instability, migration, and post-pandemic recovery. The four-day programme featured more than 1,100 presentations and keynote sessions across multiple disciplines.
Develop Athens, through the This is Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau, supported the organisation and logistics of the event. The opening ceremony took place at the Zappeion Megaron, with main sessions hosted at Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. Social events included a garden reception at the university and a formal dinner at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC).
During the opening ceremony, Ioannis Georgizas, CEO of Develop Athens, spoke on behalf of Athens Mayor Haris Doukas. “Develop Athens is the main operational arm of the Municipality of Athens, contributing decisively to the development of the municipality’s programme, which aims to transform Athens into a sustainable and carbon-neutral city,” he said.
